As a little girl, Annie John is terrified of the idea of death and becomes frightened of her mother's hands, as well. When Annie witnesses this with her own eyes, she begins to fear her mother's hands. It is important to note that Annie John's mother was charged with dressing and caring for the dead. Annie's upset at the fact that she had to have dinner and go to bed without her mother's love is just one of many instances that demonstrate the change in their mother-daughter relationship throughout the novel. To punish her, her mother takes advantage of Annie John's attachment to her and makes her eat her dinner outside and go to bed without a kiss. When questioned, she lied and said that the fishermen had not gone out to sea that day, not knowing that he had grown tired of waiting for her and dropped the fish off on his own. For example, Annie sneaks to attend a funeral and neglects to pick up the fish that her mother sent her out for. She was wrapped up in any and everything that had to do with her mother, and her mother was aware of that. She started out as a "mommy's girl," of sorts. It is made most evident in the first chapters of the book, where the author describes the changes that the relationship between Annie and her mother and their relationship. The parent-child struggle in "Annie John" is a recurrent theme throughout the novel. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Swarm by B.V. LarsonGreat story! Action, invasion, and introspection! In my opinion this is the best of the series and listening to Mark Boyett play James McGill is the only way to enjoy it. His usual gang of mercenaries is present and accounted for along with Imperator Turov, and Claver of course. To try and save mankind James will travel to the core of the Galactics universe to retrieve some high tech weaponry that could turn the tide of the war and piss off a lot of aliens. It is under attack by the “Squids,” and their superior force seems destined to destroy the planet but for better or worse earth has James McGill. As the title suggests, the setting of the six book in the “Undying Mercenaries,” series is earth. He seems to have become somewhat more mature and diplomatic given his new positon, but deep down he’s still the same old James McGill, and that’s what makes this series fun. In “Home world,” James McGill is still as obstinate and stubbornly determined to do what he thinks is right no matter what anyone else has to say and he now has rank, as in Adjunct. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Folio society finnegans wakeBetween 19 the text was reprinted six times. Brief Summary of Book: Water Song (Once Upon a Time (Simon Pulse)) by Suzanne Weyn 5/12/2023 0 Comments Book unlikely animalsSome plot twists feel a little more forced than others. This tragicomedy delivers as Clive takes a stab at adult parenting before dying and Emma navigates layers of ambiguous loss. Doolittle have to do with the opioid crisis, boomerang children, saintly healing powers, or a Westworld-esque hunting preserve for millionaires? But the reader’s patience is rewarded as Hartnett skillfully draws the string. The first quarter of the book seems like a mess of disparate parts: What does the ghost of New Hampshire’s own Dr. When Emma assumes legal guardianship over her rapidly deteriorating father, the two become embroiled in his dementia-induced obsession: a seemingly hopeless search for Emma’s childhood best friend, Crystal, a heroin addict who has been missing for almost six months. Her father, Clive, who's dying from a mysterious brain disease, is having hallucinations of animals while being haunted by the ghost of (real-life) local naturalist Ernest Harold Baynes. Never a truer word was spoken than when the ghostly inhabitants of the Maple Street cemetery in Everton, New Hampshire, who are the choruslike narrators of this novel, rationalize that “a good story doesn’t always follow an arrow.” In what begins as a slow-paced, meandering tale, Emma Starling, a natural healer and former golden girl of small-town Everton, drops out of medical school and moves back in with her parents. An absurdist, laugh-out-loud family drama about intergenerational healing. But the writer’s name surfaced in the news earlier this summer when an organization of children’s librarians, educators, and authors addressed reader concerns about Wilder’s depictions of Native and black characters, particularly in the third novel, Little House on the Prairie. The past few years have seen the release of an annotated version of Wilder’s memoir, a new book of the author’s letters, and a Pulitzer Prize–winning biography. Though Wilder and her Little House series have been immensely popular with generations of American readers, only in recent decades has her work received serious critical attention from scholars. The first book, Little House in the Big Woods, was published in 1932 when the author was 65 years old. At first, publishers passed it over, so Wilder reworked her story into a series. It took several years before she heeded her daughter’s advice and began recording her childhood experiences in a manuscript titled Pioneer Girl. At the time, Wilder was living in Missouri and writing columns for a regional farm magazine. Just over a century ago, Rose Wilder Lane wrote to her mother, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and suggested that she write about her memories growing up on the American frontier. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Maureen mahon black diamond queensIt’s been nearly thirty years since Robert Pruter released his ground breaking book, Chicago Soul, which examined the emergence of soul music in the Windy City and its key players. Ann's personal story takes us through her unhappy marriage to one man, her divorce and subsequent 'marriage' as the 19th wife of Brigham Young, a man who receives messages directly from God. The parts of the book dealing with Ann Eliza Young take in the whole history of the Mormons, from their establishment and early clashes with the Authorities - including the Haun's Mill Massacre, in which many of their number were murdered with the approval of the state government - until their final settlement in Utah. Possibly over-ambitious and ultimately disappointing. Very interesting in some places, but not as good a read as I'd been led to believe by the Richard and Judy blurb. Summary: Two novels in one – a modern murder mystery intertwined with a fictional reworking of history – set in the Mormon world of polygamy. |
